Nerissa Emers is the Deputy Associate Superintendent of Health and Nutrition Services at the Arizona Department of Education. She is a registered nurse with a bachelor’s degree in School Nursing. She also holds a certification in school nursing and a certification in health teaching. Before coming to ADE, Nerissa worked for many years as a school nurse in the public school setting and with the K-12 at risk population. Prior to specializing in School Nursing, Nerissa worked in a New Jersey trauma hospital in obstetrics and gynecology. Nerissa has also worked as a public health nurse for Maricopa County Department of Public Health.
School Health and Safety Unit includes the Clinical School Health Services program which is designed to assist schools in providing safe, quality health services for Arizona students. The purpose of this unit is to facilitate the development of standards and guidelines related to school health services and to interpret and update those that exist. Additionally, Clinical School Health Services provides and promotes professional development for school nurses and school health support staff. This unit develops and promotes a quality assurance model to enhance safe practice for the delivery of health care for Arizona students. We also review and evaluate information for the purpose of data collection and analysis. This will assist in the provision of evidence-based practices, monitoring of health related services and school nursing practices in Arizona.
